Burna Boy

Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu MFR, known professionally as Burna Boy, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and record producer born on July 2, 1991, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. He rose to prominence in 2012 with the release of “Like to Party,” the lead single from his debut studio album L.I.F.E (2013). The album, which featured collaborations with prominent Nigerian artists like 2face Idibia, M.I Abaga, and Wizkid, received critical acclaim and established Burna Boy as a major force in the Nigerian music scene. Inspired by icons like Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, and Bob Marley, Burna Boy’s sound is a unique blend of Afrobeat, dancehall, reggae, and road rap.

In 2017, Burna Boy signed with Atlantic Records in the United States, leading to the release of his third studio album, Outside (2018). The album was a significant success, earning him international recognition. It featured collaborations with artists like J Hus, Lily Allen, and Mabel, and its standout single “Ye” became one of the biggest songs of 2018. Following the success of Outside, Burna Boy released his fourth studio album, African Giant (2019), which solidified his global status. The album, which included hits like “On the Low” and “Gbona,” was critically acclaimed and earned him a nomination for Best World Music Album at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards.

Burna Boy’s achievements continued to grow as he won the Best International Act at the BET Awards in 2019, and again in 2021 and 2023, making him the first African artist to win the award three consecutive times. His fifth studio album, Twice as Tall (2020), executive produced by Diddy and his mother Bose Ogulu, was another major milestone in his career. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard World Albums Chart and won the Grammy Award for Best Global Music Album at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards.

In 2022, Burna Boy released his sixth studio album, Love, Damini, which became the highest-charting African album in several countries, including the UK and France. The album’s success further cemented his status as one of the leading artists in the global music scene. His influence was recognized when he was awarded the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in Nigeria, and in 2023, Rolling Stone ranked him number 197 on its list of the 200 greatest singers of all time.

Burna Boy’s upbringing played a significant role in shaping his musical career. Raised in southern Nigeria, he was influenced by his mother, a language translator who later became his manager, and his grandfather, Benson Idonije, who once managed the legendary Fela Kuti. Burna Boy’s education in media technology at the University of Sussex and media communications at Oxford Brookes University also contributed to his understanding of the industry. After returning to Nigeria, he launched his music career in Lagos, and the rest, as they say, is history.
