About Blood Orange

Blood Orange is the stage name of Devonté Hynes, a London-born artist known for weaving a rich tapestry of genres into his music. Born David Joseph Michael Hynes on December 23, 1985, he’s more than just a musician—he’s a storyteller, composer, and creative force. Hynes began his musical path with the short-lived but explosive dance-punk trio Test Icicles before exploring folk and orchestral pop under the name Lightspeed Champion. In 2011, he reinvented himself once again as Blood Orange, a project that would define his distinct artistic voice.

With albums like Coastal Grooves, Cupid Deluxe, Freetown Sound, and Negro Swan, Hynes has earned critical praise for his deeply personal and socially conscious work. His sound blends alternative R&B, funk, soul, and indie pop, while lyrically exploring themes like identity, queerness, race, and emotional vulnerability. His ability to turn raw introspection into smooth, groove-laced melodies makes his music resonate on a deeply human level.

Outside of his solo projects, Hynes has become a trusted collaborator for some of music’s most visionary artists, including Solange, FKA Twigs, A$AP Rocky, and Carly Rae Jepsen. His talent extends beyond albums—he’s composed hauntingly beautiful scores for films like Queen & Slim and Passing, proving his gift for creating atmosphere and emotion through sound.

Now based in New York City, Hynes continues to experiment, evolve, and connect through music. Whether he’s behind the mic or the mixing board, his work remains emotionally honest, genre-defying, and culturally significant.
