About Benny the Butcher

Jeremie Damon Pennick, known professionally as Benny the Butcher, is a prominent American rapper and songwriter, recognized for his raw, gritty lyricism that reflects his experiences growing up in Buffalo, New York. Born on November 27, 1984. Benny is a key figure in the rap collective Griselda, which he formed with his cousins, Westside Gunn and Conway the Machine. Together, they have spearheaded a revival of 1990s-inspired “grimy” hip-hop, characterized by its vivid storytelling and mafioso themes.

Benny’s early life was marked by challenges. Raised in Buffalo’s impoverished Montana Avenue neighborhood, he was the second eldest of eight siblings and grew up in a single-parent household. By the age of 14, Benny had turned to drug dealing, a path influenced by his environment and the pervasive poverty in his community. Despite these circumstances, his passion for music emerged early on, and he began recording his first mixtapes in the early 2000s, working closely with local Buffalo producer DJ Shay.

In 2004, Benny released his first mixtape, Tana Talk, a project that, despite being lost media today, laid the foundation for his future in music. The Tana Talk series would become a significant part of his discography, with the third installment, Tana Talk 3 (2018), marking his official debut album and propelling him into the spotlight. This album, produced by The Alchemist and Griselda’s in-house producer Daringer, was critically acclaimed for its introspective lyrics and gritty production, solidifying Benny’s reputation as a leading voice in the resurgence of street-oriented hip-hop.

Tragedy struck Benny’s life when his older brother, Marchello Lowery, also known as Machine Gun Blak, was murdered in a drive-by shooting in 2006. Benny was in jail at the time, serving a sentence for parole violation, and the loss of his brother had a profound impact on him. This event deeply influenced his music, with much of his work reflecting on the pain and trauma of losing a sibling to street violence. The death of Machine Gun Blak also motivated Benny to push harder in his music career, leading to a prolific period where he released numerous mixtapes between 2007 and 2013, even as he continued to navigate the dangerous lifestyle that his lyrics often describe.

In 2016, Benny rebranded himself as Benny the Butcher and released the mixtape My First Brick, which showcased a shift in his artistic direction towards a more polished and cohesive sound. His work with Griselda Records, particularly alongside Daringer, helped him refine his style, leading to collaborations with major artists and critical success. The mixtape Butcher on Steroids (2017), a collaboration with DJ Green Lantern, was another milestone, earning Benny widespread praise and further establishing his place in the rap industry.

In 2019, Benny released the acclaimed EP The Plugs I Met, featuring collaborations with heavyweights like Black Thought and Pusha T. His growing influence in the industry was cemented with a management deal with Roc Nation that same year. Benny continued to build on this momentum with projects like Burden of Proof (2020) and Tana Talk 4 (2022), both of which received critical acclaim.

Benny the Butcher’s career reached new heights in 2024 with the release of his major-label debut album Everybody Can’t Go under Def Jam Recordings. The album featured an impressive lineup of guest artists, including Lil Wayne, Jadakiss, and his Griselda cousins, and was produced by The Alchemist and Hit-Boy, showcasing Benny’s continued evolution as an artist.

Despite the challenges he faced, including a raid on his recording studio in 2023 and being placed on a federal watchlist, Benny the Butcher remains a resilient and influential figure in hip-hop, known for his powerful storytelling and unwavering commitment to his craft. His music stands as a testament to his journey from the streets of Buffalo to the heights of the rap world, making him one of the most compelling voices in contemporary hip-hop.
