About Yandel
Llandel Veguilla Malavé, known professionally as Yandel, was born on January 14, 1977, in Cayey, Puerto Rico. He is widely recognized as one half of the iconic reggaeton duo Wisin & Yandel, alongside Juan Luis Morera Luna, better known as Wisin. Yandel grew up in a humble environment and, before his rise to fame in the music industry, worked as a barber in his hometown. His early exposure to music, particularly reggaeton, helped shape his career, and he eventually teamed up with Wisin to create one of the most influential duos in Latin music.
Yandel’s journey in the music industry began in the late 1990s when he and Wisin met during their school days. The two began performing together, initially under the name “Llandel,” before releasing their first album, Los Reyes del Nuevo Milenio, in 2000. They gained traction with their debut and were soon recognized as pioneers in the reggaeton genre. In 2003, the duo signed with Universal’s subsidiary, Fresh Productions, and released Mi Vida… My Life. However, it was their 2005 album Pa’l Mundo that catapulted them to mainstream success, earning them international fame. The album featured some of their biggest hits, including “Rakata” and “Llamé Pa’ Verte (Bailando Sexy).”
In addition to their musical success as a duo, Yandel embarked on a solo career. His first solo album, Quien Contra Mí, was released in 2003. Though it garnered attention, it was his second solo effort, De Líder a Leyenda, released in 2013, that solidified his individual success. The album, certified Gold by the RIAA in 2014, featured hit singles like “Hasta Abajo” and “Moviendo Caderas.” Yandel’s third album, Dangerous, was released in 2015, continuing his solo trajectory and showcasing his ability to maintain relevance in the evolving Latin music landscape.
While Yandel pursued his solo career, Wisin & Yandel temporarily went on hiatus after their Líderes tour in 2013. During this period, Yandel focused on touring and releasing new music, continuing to attract a loyal fanbase. After their break, Wisin & Yandel reunited in 2018, much to the delight of their fans, and continued to perform and release music as a duo.
On the personal front, Yandel married his longtime girlfriend, Edneris Espada Figueroa, in July 2004. The couple has two children together, Adrián Yandel Veguilla, born in 2001, and Dereck Adrián Veguilla, born in 2004. Despite his demanding career, Yandel has consistently expressed the importance of family in his life.
Over the course of his career, Yandel has collaborated with numerous high-profile artists, including Daddy Yankee, Don Omar, Romeo Santos, Jennifer Lopez, and Chris Brown. Wisin & Yandel’s 2012 hit, “Follow the Leader,” featuring Jennifer Lopez, further cemented their legacy in Latin music.
With a career spanning over two decades, Yandel has played a pivotal role in popularizing reggaeton globally. His ability to balance a successful solo career with his work in Wisin & Yandel underscores his influence and lasting impact on Latin music.
