About Vybz Kartel
Vybz Kartel, born Adidja Azim Palmer on January 7, 1976, in Kingston, Jamaica, is one of the most influential figures in dancehall music, known for his innovative sound and provocative lyrics. Kartel started his musical journey at the young age of 12, initially performing under the name “Adi Banton.” His career took off in 1993 with the release of his debut single “Love Fat Woman.” By the late 1990s, Kartel formed the group Vybz Kartel with friends Mr. Lee and Escobar, later using the name for his solo career. His breakthrough came in the early 2000s with massive hits like “Romping Shop” and “Dancehall Hero,” which helped redefine the genre. Kartel went on to establish his own label, Adidjahiem/Notnice Records, and founded the Portmore Empire, nurturing new talents such as Popcaan and Tommy Lee.
Kartel’s career took a dramatic turn in 2011 when he was arrested and convicted for the murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams. Despite his incarceration, his influence on the dancehall scene remained undeniable, as he continued to release music prolifically from behind bars. In 2024, the Privy Council in London overturned his conviction due to irregularities, including allegations of juror bribery. Post-release, Kartel has expressed regret over his past association with gangsterism, now focusing on promoting education and positive change. His legacy is shaped by his transformative impact on dancehall music, his entrepreneurial ventures, and his journey of personal reflection and growth.
