Tijeritas

José Soto Cortés, better known by his stage name Tijeritas, is a celebrated Spanish flamenco-pop singer whose voice has echoed through the heart of Andalusia and beyond for decades. Born on April 15, 1964, in Málaga, Spain, he was raised in the flamenco-rich neighborhood of Cruz Verde, where music ran through the veins of his family, affectionately known as Los Viscos. Immersed in the rhythms of flamenco from a young age, it was only natural that Tijeritas would go on to become one of the genre’s most recognizable voices.

He began performing at local flamenco venues as a child, nurtured by flamenco legend Miguel de los Reyes. At just 18, he debuted at Madrid’s famous tablao Los Canasteros, where his raw talent caught the attention of producer Miguel Ángel Arenas “Capi”. This led to the release of his debut album Pegaso que tienes Alas in 1983. His stage name, “Tijeritas” (meaning “Little Scissors”), was a nickname gifted by none other than Camarón de la Isla, playfully referencing Tijeritas’s knack for trimming songs mid-performance.

With over 20 albums to his name, Tijeritas has carved a unique path blending traditional flamenco with pop influences. Albums like Sueño con las Estrellas, Luna de Coral, and Me lo puso Camarón earned him acclaim, while his collaborative work on Corazón Gitano with Saray Vargas highlighted his versatility and commitment to musical evolution.

Even in recent years, Tijeritas remains an active force in the music world. Projects like Leyenda Viva 30 Aniversario (2017) and Una Voz Libre (2021) are proof of his enduring passion and influence. Revered for his authenticity and soulful delivery, Tijeritas continues to inspire new generations while honoring the spirit of flamenco.
