About The Smashing Pumpkins

The Smashing Pumpkins, an influential American alternative rock band from Chicago, were formed in 1988 by frontman and guitarist Billy Corgan, bassist D’arcy Wretzky, guitarist James Iha, and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin. The band’s music, known for its diverse and densely layered sound, incorporates elements from gothic rock, heavy metal, grunge, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, shoegaze, dream pop, and electronica. Despite various lineup changes since their reunion in 2006, Corgan remains the primary songwriter and the sole constant member.

The band’s debut album, Gish (1991), achieved underground success, but it was their second album, Siamese Dream (1993), that solidified their popularity. The album, despite a tumultuous recording process, received critical acclaim and is regarded as one of the best albums in alternative rock history. Their third album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995), further cemented their place in rock history. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, was certified Diamond by the RIAA, and received extensive praise from critics. However, the band faced internal conflicts, drug use, and diminishing sales, leading to their disbandment by the end of the 1990s.

Following their breakup, the band sold 30 million albums worldwide, becoming one of the most successful and critically acclaimed bands of the 1990s. They were often cited as a cultural touchstone of Generation X and played a significant role in popularizing alternative rock. The Smashing Pumpkins reunited in 2006, with Corgan and Chamberlin recording Zeitgeist. Despite Chamberlin’s departure in 2009, Corgan continued with the rotating lineup project Teargarden by Kaleidyscope, which included Oceania (2012) and Monuments to an Elegy (2014). Chamberlin returned in 2015, and with Iha rejoining in 2018, they released Shiny and Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun. (2018) and Cyr (2020). Their ambitious project, Atum: A Rock Opera in Three Acts, was released in parts between 2022 and 2023.

In October 2023, the band announced the departure of guitarist Jeff Schroeder and the beginning of a new chapter. By January 2024, they had selected Kiki Wong as their new touring guitarist. In June 2024, Corgan revealed that the band had been working on a guitar-driven album, a response to the critical reception of Atum. Their thirteenth album, Aghori Mhori Mei, was released digitally on August 2, 2024, with physical editions to follow.

The Smashing Pumpkins’ music, marked by its layered guitar tracks and dynamic shifts, has been shaped by a wide range of influences, including heavy metal, post-punk, gothic rock, and psychedelic rock. Corgan’s vision and ambition have driven the band’s evolution, making them a unique entity in alternative rock. Their work has influenced a broad array of artists and bands, and their innovative approach to music continues to resonate in the rock genre.
