About the olllam

The olllam is a dynamic Transatlantic collective known for blending traditional Irish music with Detroit’s post-rock influences. Formed in 2012, the band features Belfast-born uilleann piper John McSherry, Detroit native Tyler Duncan (who plays uilleann pipes, whistles, guitar, and Rhodes), and drummer Michael Shimmin. The name “olllam” is derived from an old Irish term meaning “a master of a skill,” reflecting the trio’s exceptional musicianship and deep connection to their craft.

The roots of the band trace back to when Duncan, at just 13 years old, traveled from Ann Arbor, Michigan, to Ireland to study under McSherry. What started as a mentor-mentee relationship blossomed into a full-fledged musical collaboration, leading to their debut album, The olllam, released in 2012. The album was met with critical acclaim and won the Indie Acoustic Music Award for Best Instrumental Album.

The olllam’s sound is a unique fusion of intricate melodies and complex rhythms, blending the rich tradition of Irish music with modern genres. Over the years, the band has expanded its lineup and collaborated with notable artists like bassist Joe Dart of Vulfpeck and keyboardist Joe Hettinga, further enriching their musical style.

Their 2022 album Elegy cemented their place in the music scene, earning the RTÉ Radio Best Group award at the Folk Awards. With their innovative approach, the olllam continues to captivate audiences, seamlessly merging tradition with contemporary influences.
