About The Divine Comedy
The Divine Comedy is the brainchild of Northern Irish singer-songwriter Neil Hannon, known for crafting lush, intelligent pop music infused with wit, charm, and orchestral flair. Since forming the project in 1989, Hannon has remained its heart and soul, steering its sound through decades of evolution while always maintaining a flair for storytelling and theatricality.
The Divine Comedy’s early albums, Liberation (1993) and Promenade (1994), were rich with literary references and whimsical melodies, quickly establishing Hannon as a unique voice in British music. But it was Casanova (1996), with hits like “Something for the Weekend,” that brought the project into the mainstream, thanks to its cheeky lyrics and lush arrangements.
Hannon followed up with a string of critically acclaimed albums, including Fin de Siècle (1998), which featured the irreverent anthem “National Express,” and Absent Friends (2004), home to the poignant “Come Home Billy Bird.” Albums like Bang Goes the Knighthood (2010) showed Hannon’s continued mastery of blending satire, melancholy, and melodic elegance.
Outside The Divine Comedy, Hannon has dabbled in a variety of artistic ventures, from composing the theme for the beloved sitcom Father Ted to forming The Duckworth Lewis Method—a cricket-themed pop project with Thomas Walsh that earned an Ivor Novello nomination.
To celebrate 30 years of music, The Divine Comedy released the box set Venus, Cupid, Folly and Time in 2020, offering fans remastered albums and rare gems. It was a fitting tribute to one of pop’s most literate and consistently surprising voices.
