SofĂa Lauren Daccarett Char, professionally known as Sofia Carson, was born on April 10, 1993, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to parents who had emigrated from Barranquilla, Colombia. From a young age, Sofia showed an affinity for the arts, which led her to attend St. Hugh School and later graduate from Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart in Miami. Her passion for performing was nurtured at In Motion Dance Studio, where she was part of the IMPAC Youth Ensemble program, competing across the United States. After high school, she pursued higher education at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), majoring in communications with a minor in French.

Sofia Carson’s entry into the entertainment world began in 2012 when she signed with Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) as a singer-songwriter. Two years later, in 2014, she made her television debut with a guest appearance on the Disney Channel series Austin & Ally, followed by a recurring role on MTV’s Faking It. However, her breakthrough came in 2015 when she was cast as Evie, the daughter of the Evil Queen, in Disney’s musical fantasy film Descendants. This role catapulted her to fame, and she reprised it in the film’s sequels, Descendants 2 and Descendants 3, as well as the animated spin-off Descendants: Wicked World. Her portrayal of Evie resonated with audiences, establishing her as a beloved figure in Disney’s modern fairytale universe.

In addition to her acting career, Carson made significant strides in music. Her musical debut was tied to the Descendants franchise, contributing to its successful soundtrack in 2015. Following the film’s success, she signed with Hollywood Records and released her debut solo single, “Love Is the Name,” in 2016, which garnered positive reception. Over the years, she continued to release music, including collaborations with prominent artists like Alan Walker and R3hab. In 2022, she released her self-titled debut studio album, which showcased her evolution as a musician. That same year, Carson performed the Oscar-nominated song “Applause” at the 95th Academy Awards, further solidifying her status as a versatile artist.

Carson’s film career expanded beyond Disney with roles in various projects, including the Netflix romantic drama Purple Hearts in 2022, where she starred as Cassie. Not only did she play the lead role, but she also served as an executive producer and contributed to the film’s soundtrack. Her song “Come Back Home” from the film won Best Musical Moment at the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards, highlighting her multifaceted talents in acting and music.

Beyond her work in entertainment, Carson has been involved in several philanthropic endeavors. In 2019, she was appointed the first Global Ambassador of the Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation, advocating for music education and scholarships. She also became a global ambassador for Revlon in 2020 and launched her own makeup collection. In recognition of her humanitarian efforts, she was named a UNICEF Ambassador and later honored as the Global Advocate of the Year by the United Nations Correspondents Association in 2023.
