About Sleepy Hallow
Sleepy Hallow, born Tegan Joshua Anthony Chambers on December 20, 1999, is a Jamaican-American rapper who has made a name for himself in the Brooklyn drill scene. Born in Jamaica, he moved to the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, as a child. It was here, in the culturally vibrant but challenging environment of Flatbush, that Sleepy Hallow developed his passion for music, especially hip-hop. By the age of 12, he began rapping, adopting the name “Sleepy Hallow” from his street reputation. He dropped out of school in ninth grade but found his calling in music, which would eventually lead to his breakout success.
Sleepy Hallow’s journey to recognition began when he met his frequent collaborator and friend, Sheff G. Interestingly, the two first encountered each other in a confrontational situation but formed a friendship after Sheff G was impressed by Sleepy Hallow’s demeanor. This connection laid the groundwork for their collaborative efforts that would propel both of their careers. Sleepy Hallow, Sheff G, and DizzyGotBands were briefly signed to former NFL player Junior Galette’s Nula Entertainment from 2017 to 2018. However, Sleepy’s real breakthrough came after joining Winners Circle Entertainment, a label he signed with in 2019, and which later formed a joint venture with RCA Records.
Sleepy Hallow’s first taste of widespread recognition came with the release of “Flows” in 2019, a track featuring Sheff G. However, it was his 2020 hit “Deep End Freestyle” featuring Fousheé that earned him his first significant chart success. The single peaked at number 80 on the Billboard Hot 100, was certified platinum by the RIAA, and accumulated over 85 million streams. This track solidified his position in the Brooklyn drill scene and established him as a rising star in hip-hop.
In 2021, Sleepy Hallow released his debut studio album Still Sleep?, which included the hit single “2055.” The futuristic, animated music video accompanying the song helped it gain widespread popularity, and “2055” peaked at number 51 on the Billboard Hot 100. The track would later be certified double platinum, further cementing Sleepy Hallow’s place in the industry. His melodic flow and unique take on drill music, blending hard-hitting beats with introspective lyrics, have set him apart from his peers.
Despite his musical success, Sleepy Hallow has faced significant legal challenges. In May 2023, he, along with Sheff G and 32 other alleged gang members, was indicted on a variety of charges related to gang conspiracy, including links to shootings and a murder. He was released on bail later that month and has been awaiting trial. Nevertheless, Sleepy Hallow’s career has continued to flourish. In September 2023, he released his second studio album, Boy Meets World, which features collaborations with artists like Marshmello and Doechii.
Sleepy Hallow’s music often reflects the realities of his upbringing, blending gritty narratives of street life with melodic hooks. His authenticity and ability to turn personal experiences into compelling music have garnered him a loyal fan base. With his legal issues still unresolved, Sleepy Hallow remains a significant figure in Brooklyn drill, continuing to shape the genre while navigating the complexities of his personal life and career.
