Serj Tankian, born on August 21, 1967, in Beirut, Lebanon, is an Armenian-American musician, composer, and activist. At the age of seven, he moved with his family to Los Angeles, where he became deeply connected to the Armenian community, an experience that would later influence much of his music and activism.

Tankian is most widely recognized as the lead vocalist of the iconic alternative metal band, System of a Down, formed in 1994. Known for their fusion of heavy metal and traditional Armenian musical elements, the band garnered global acclaim. In 2006, they won a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance with their hit song “B.Y.O.B.”
