About Sasha Alex Sloan

Alexandra Artourovna Yatchenko, professionally known as Sasha Alex Sloan, was born on March 11, 1995. An American singer-songwriter, Sloan has carved a notable path in the music industry with her introspective lyrics and unique sound. Raised in South Boston, Sloan’s early musical journey began when she taught herself to play piano on an instrument her mother bought for her at the age of five. Her childhood was marked by visits to her grandparents’ farm in Siberia, Russia, where she spent her summers, contributing to her diverse cultural experiences.

After graduating from high school, Sloan pursued higher education at the Berklee College of Music. A pivotal moment in her early career came when a photo of her parents’ playful prank—writing “DORK” next to her room—went viral on Reddit. Seizing this opportunity, Sloan included a link to her SoundCloud profile, which led to Warner Chappell Music offering her a publishing deal. At nineteen, she moved to Los Angeles to follow her songwriting dreams while working at a coffee shop to support herself. Her dedication paid off when she made her US national TV debut on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on February 6, 2019.

Sloan’s professional music career took off in 2015 with her involvement in Kaskade’s song “Phoenix,” where she was credited as both a featured artist and songwriter. Her songwriting prowess continued to shine as she contributed to tracks for artists such as Idina Menzel, Maggie Lindemann, and Camila Cabello. In 2017, she was featured on Kygo’s song “This Town,” which she also co-wrote.

Her debut EP, Sad Girl, was released in April 2018 under RCA Records, followed by her second EP, Loser, in November 2018. Both EPs helped establish her as a rising artist in the music scene. During this period, Sloan co-wrote Juice WRLD’s hit single “Black & White,” which appeared on his debut album, Goodbye & Good Riddance. The same year, she embarked on her first headlining tour to support the Loser EP, with her single “Older” being performed on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Sloan’s third EP, Self-Portrait, released in October 2019, delved deeper into themes of anxiety and personal struggle. The EP was a reflection of her experiences and emotional landscape, resonating with her growing audience. In April 2020, she released the single “I’ll Wait,” produced by Kygo, and soon after announced her debut album, Only Child. The album, released on October 16, 2020, received critical acclaim for its honest and expressive songwriting. The lead single “Lie” and the follow-up “House With No Mirrors” further showcased her talent and lyrical depth.

In 2021, Sloan collaborated with Sam Hunt on the song “when was it over?” which explored themes of post-breakup emotions and unresolved feelings. Her second studio album, I Blame The World, was released on May 13, 2022. Sloan described the album as a more cohesive project compared to Only Child, with a deliberate thematic unity throughout the tracks.

Sloan’s journey continued with her decision to become an independent artist in March 2023, marking her departure from RCA Records. She participated in the 22nd Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April 2023. In 2024, Sloan took part in season 5 of the Chinese variety show Sisters Who Make Waves, though she withdrew due to health issues. Through her evolving career, Sasha Alex Sloan has demonstrated resilience and a commitment to authentic self-expression, securing her place as a distinctive voice in contemporary music.
