About PUN
Big Pun, born Christopher Lee Rios on November 10, 1971, in the South Bronx, was a trailblazing force in hip-hop. Of Puerto Rican descent, he grew up immersed in the vibrant but often harsh realities of the Bronx, shaping the gritty, rapid-fire lyrical style that would later set him apart.
Pun’s career took a major leap when he caught the attention of fellow Bronx rapper Fat Joe, appearing on Joe’s 1995 album Jealous One’s Envy. Just a few years later, Big Pun dropped his solo debut, Capital Punishment (1998), a landmark album that reached number five on the Billboard 200 and earned a Grammy nomination. It wasn’t just a personal victory — it made history as the first solo rap album by a Latino artist to go platinum, breaking barriers for Latin artists in hip-hop.
Known for his complex wordplay, punchy storytelling, and effortless flow, Big Pun became a major voice of East Coast rap. He was also a core member of the Terror Squad collective, contributing to their 1999 release The Album and influencing a generation of rappers.
Sadly, Big Pun’s life was cut tragically short. Battling health issues tied to his lifelong struggle with weight, he passed away from a heart attack on February 7, 2000, at just 28 years old. His posthumous album, Yeeeah Baby, debuted at number three on the charts, solidifying his legacy.
In 2021, his hometown honored him with a dedicated street corner in the Bronx — a lasting tribute to a legend who changed the face of hip-hop.
