About ポルノグラフィティ (Porno Graffitti)
Porno Graffitti is a beloved Japanese rock band that emerged from Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture, in 1994. Originally called “No Score” — a nod to their early struggles with reading music — the group was started by Haruichi Shindō and his cousin. The lineup truly solidified when Shindō brought in vocalist Akihito Okano and bassist Masami “Tama” Shiratama. Impressed by Okano’s vocal ability, Shindō shifted to guitar, and the band adopted the name “Porno Graffitti,” inspired by the 1990 album by the American band Extreme.
The band made their major debut in 1999 with the single “Apollo,” which quickly climbed the Oricon charts and marked the beginning of their rise. Hits like “Saudade” and “Agehachō” soon followed, both selling over a million copies and establishing them as a major force in Japanese pop-rock. What truly broadened their reach, however, were their iconic anime tie-ins — most notably “Melissa” for Fullmetal Alchemist, “Hitori no Yoru” for Great Teacher Onizuka, and “THE DAY” for My Hero Academia. Their music, often blending emotional lyrics with upbeat rock melodies, became a signature sound across multiple generations of anime fans.
Though Shiratama left the group in 2004, Okano and Shindō have kept the band going strong, continuing to release albums, perform live, and connect with fans. With a career spanning decades, Porno Graffitti remains a staple in the J-Rock scene — known for their energetic performances, catchy hooks, and deep ties to anime and Japanese pop culture.
