About NCT DREAM
NCT DREAM is a South Korean boy group and the third sub-unit of NCT, formed by SM Entertainment in 2016. Initially conceived as the teenaged unit of NCT with an admission-and-graduation system, where members would leave after reaching the age of majority (20 in Korean age, 19 internationally), the group eventually re-branded in 2020 to become a fixed unit. NCT DREAM debuted on August 25, 2016, with the single “Chewing Gum” and an original lineup of seven members: Mark, Renjun, Jeno, Haechan, Jaemin, Chenle, and Jisung. At the time of their debut, the average age of the members was just 15.6 years old, setting the tone for a youthful image that reflected the themes of adolescence, growth, and transition. Initially, Mark, the oldest member, graduated from the group in late 2018 as per the original system, but he returned in 2020 when SM Entertainment restructured the group to continue with all seven members permanently.
Their music quickly gained attention, with the group making a mark on the K-pop scene through energetic performances and vibrant visuals. In 2019, NCT DREAM experienced a surge in popularity with the release of their EP We Boom, which became one of the best-selling albums of the year domestically and earned the group several awards, including Bonsangs at the Golden Disc Awards and Seoul Music Awards. This momentum carried forward into 2020 with their fourth EP, Reload, which exceeded half a million pre-orders, further solidifying their reputation as one of the top K-pop acts. However, it was their first full-length studio album Hot Sauce in 2021 that truly established their commercial dominance. The album garnered 1.71 million pre-orders and became the best-selling album in South Korea during the first half of 2021. The album’s title track also led to widespread recognition, with its infectious energy and catchy hook appealing to both longtime fans and newcomers alike.
NCT DREAM’s global influence extends beyond just chart success. The group has consistently been recognized for their impact on youth culture and the music industry, making them the first and only Asian artists to appear three times consecutively on Billboard’s “21 Under 21” list from 2018 to 2020. Their inclusion on this list reflects their influence not only on music sales but also on social media and streaming platforms, where they have garnered a large and dedicated fan base. Additionally, in 2018, Time magazine listed them among the “25 Most Influential Teens,” further highlighting their role as cultural icons for younger generations.
Their music, initially characterized by themes of youthful innocence and fun, has evolved to reflect more complex emotions and experiences as the members themselves have grown older. Tracks like “My First and Last” and “We Go Up” showcase this shift from innocence to more assertive and rebellious narratives, appealing to their audience’s own transitions from adolescence to adulthood. As NCT DREAM continues to evolve both musically and conceptually, their global fanbase has expanded alongside them, further cementing their place as one of K-pop’s most influential and successful acts. The group’s consistent output of hit albums, singles, and live performances shows no signs of slowing down, with each release only adding to their growing legacy.
