Mukul Sharma

Mukul Sharma (1949/1950 – March 1, 2019) was a distinguished Indian writer, journalist, and polymath whose work spanned science, literature, and cinema. Raised in an army family, he pursued English literature at Asutosh College in Kolkata. Sharma made a significant impact as the editor of Science Today in Mumbai, where he also penned the popular “Mindsport” column, exploring the realms of science, the supernatural, and human cognition.

In addition to his writing, Sharma was an accomplished actor, particularly known for his collaborations with his first wife, the renowned filmmaker Aparna Sen. He appeared in several of her films, including 36 Chowringhee Lane (1981) and Paroma (1984), playing a young photographer named Rahul. Sharma’s literary prowess extended to fiction, with works like the short story Mobius Trips, which was adapted into the 2013 film Ek Thi Daayan, produced by Vishal Bhardwaj and featuring his daughter, actress Konkona Sen Sharma.

Sharma’s eclectic career left a lasting legacy, with his contributions shaping India’s cultural and intellectual landscape. He passed away on March 1, 2019, in New Delhi, at the age of 69. He is survived by his wife, Binita, and daughters Kamalini and Konkona, leaving behind a rich body of work that continues to inspire.
