Michael W. Smith

Michael W. Smith, born on October 7, 1957, in Kenova, West Virginia, is a celebrated American musician, songwriter, and actor who has had a lasting impact on contemporary Christian music. From an early age, Smith showed an aptitude for music, composing his first pieces at just five years old. His spiritual journey took shape when he gave his life to Christ at ten, although his college years were marked by struggles with substance abuse. After a personal turning point in 1979, he recommitted to his faith, which would go on to shape both his music and career.

Smith’s professional journey began in Nashville, where he collaborated with renowned artists, including playing keyboard for Amy Grant and contributing as a songwriter. His debut album, The Michael W. Smith Project, released in 1983, set the stage for a successful and expansive career. Over the years, Smith has released 38 albums, selling over 19 million copies worldwide, with his music touching millions.

A decorated artist, Smith has earned 45 Dove Awards and three Grammy Awards. His 1991 hit “Place in This World” made an impressive mark on the mainstream music charts, reaching No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.
