About Marama
Márama, stylized as Marama, is a prominent Uruguayan band that emerged in 2014 under the creative direction of Fer Vázquez, the leader of the successful group Rombai. The band’s lineup initially included Agustín Casanova as the lead singer, alongside Marcos Ifrán on percussion, Alejandro Vázquez on keyboards, Pablo Arnoletti on percussion, and Martín Zina on guitar. However, over time, the group saw changes in its membership with the departure of several members, including Alejandro Vázquez, Martín Zina, Danny Muller, Matias Bernaola, and Marcos Ifrán.
The band’s breakthrough came with the release of their debut studio album, Todo Comenzó Bailando, in 2015. The album was a commercial success, topping charts in Argentina and Uruguay and earning Gold and 2× Platinum certifications in these countries. The success of this album was propelled by hit singles such as “Todo Comenzó Bailando,” “Loquita,” and “No Te Vayas,” which resonated with audiences across Latin America. Their initial tracks captured the essence of cumbia pop, a genre that blends traditional cumbia rhythms with contemporary sounds, establishing Márama as a leading name in this musical style.
Márama’s rise to fame was further solidified by their energetic live performances and their debut biographical documentary film, Marama & Rombai – El Viaje, released in June 2016. The film provided an intimate look into the band’s journey and helped to increase their visibility. The group continued to make waves with their performances at prestigious venues such as the Municipal Velodrome of Montevideo, Gran Rex Theater, and Luna Park Stadium. They also received accolades for their presence on streaming platforms, being among the top ten most listened-to artists on Spotify in Argentina by 2015.
Despite their success, the band faced challenges, including labor differences, which ultimately led to their dissolution at the end of 2017. The split was attributed to internal conflicts, including a quarrel between Fer Vázquez and the band’s representative, compounded by Casanova’s involvement in the filming of the telenovela Simona. This period of inactivity saw the band members pursuing individual projects, but Márama’s impact on the cumbia pop scene remained significant.
In September 2021, Márama’s return was hinted at through a teaser video on their official Twitter account, which generated considerable excitement among fans. This anticipation culminated in Agustín Casanova’s official announcement of the band’s comeback during the final episode of the second season of Got Talent Uruguay. The band’s reformation was marked by the release of “Ya No Llora” on September 28, 2021, which quickly climbed the Billboard Argentina Hot 100, reaching number 8, and also charted in Uruguay and Chile.
The band continued to build on this renewed momentum with a series of successful releases, including “No Quiero Verte,” featuring Hernán and La Champions Liga, and “Nunca Más,” which notably included a special appearance by soccer player Luis Suárez in its video clip. 2022 saw further collaborations with notable artists, including Luciano Pereyra on “Aunque Te Enamores,” Nacho on “La Culpa,” and Migrantes and Nico Valdi on “Nuestro Amor Regresa.”
In 2023, Márama continued to make waves with their collaboration “Dame Un Besito” featuring Argentine singer Rodrigo Tapari, which charted at number 67 on the Billboard Argentina Hot 100. This track marked their fourth appearance on the chart and underscored the band’s enduring appeal and versatility. Márama’s journey from their explosive debut to their triumphant return exemplifies their resilience and continued influence in the Latin American music scene.
