Cunningham’s early music career saw her collaborating with producer Tyler Chester, resulting in her 2014 self-released album Authenticity. However, she later distanced herself from this project, feeling it no longer aligned with her artistic vision. Her breakthrough came in 2019 with Who Are You Now, an album that earned a Grammy nomination for Best Americana Album, showcasing her growth as an artist. She continued her musical evolution with the release of Revealer in 2022, which won the Grammy for Best Folk Album in 2023, further cementing her place in the music industry.

In October 2024, Cunningham joined forces with renowned multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bird to release Cunningham Bird, an album that covers the 1973 Buckingham Nicks album in its entirety.
