Luke Hemmings, whose full name is Luke Robert Hemmings was born on July 16, 1996, in Sydney, Australia. He is best known as the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the pop-rock band 5 Seconds of Summer. He was raised in Freemans Reach, a suburb in New South Wales’ Hawkesbury district, Luke grew up in a working-class family with his parents, Andrew and Liz Hemmings, and two older brothers, Ben and Jack. His father worked as a maintenance worker, and his mother was an accountant turned high school math teacher, later transitioning to photography. Music became an integral part of Luke’s life from a young age, with his brothers teaching him guitar when he was just ten years old. As he honed his skills, Luke turned to YouTube for tutorials, which further fueled his passion for music.
In 2011, at just 14 years old, Luke began posting song covers on YouTube under the username “hemmo1996.” His cover of Mike Posner’s “Please Don’t Go” marked his first foray into online music, and as his videos started gaining traction, he invited his schoolmates Calum Hood and Michael Clifford to join him. The trio’s collaboration laid the foundation for what would eventually become 5 Seconds of Summer. Later that year, Ashton Irwin joined the group, completing the band’s lineup. Their journey began humbly, performing their first official gig on December 3, 2011, at a small bar in their hometown. The band’s early covers and original songs quickly caught the attention of major music labels, leading them to sign a publishing deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing.
Over the years, 5 Seconds of Summer has become one of Australia’s most successful musical exports, selling over 10 million albums and more than two million concert tickets worldwide. Their music has resonated with millions, and the band’s songs have accumulated over seven billion streams globally. With five studio albums to their name—5 Seconds of Summer (2014), Sounds Good Feels Good (2015), Youngblood (2018), Calm (2020), and 5SOS5 (2022)—the band has enjoyed massive success, with their debut single “She Looks So Perfect” topping charts in Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and the UK.
Luke Hemmings has also pursued a solo career alongside his work with the band. In August 2021, he released his debut solo album, When Facing the Things We Turn Away From, which debuted atop the ARIA Albums Chart. The album, which showcased Luke’s introspective songwriting and melodic sensibilities, received widespread acclaim and peaked within the top 20 in Belgium and the United Kingdom. In 2024, Luke continued to explore his solo artistry, releasing the EP Boy in April, followed by the Nostalgia For A Time That Never Existed tour.
In addition to his musical career, Luke has ventured into modeling. Signed with Wilhelmina Models, he made his debut at New York Fashion Week in 2019, walking the runway for Philipp Plein’s Autumn/Winter collection. His modeling work has also included appearances in Numéro Homme and as the cover model for Glass Man magazine’s Winter 2019 issue.
From his modest beginnings in a small Australian suburb to becoming a global music sensation, Luke Hemmings’ journey is a testament to his talent, determination, and passion for music. As both a solo artist and a member of 5 Seconds of Summer, Luke continues to captivate audiences worldwide, solidifying his place in the music industry.
