About LOUKI

Louki, born Darren McGarvey in 1984, is a Scottish rapper, author, and social commentator who has become known for tackling social issues through his music and writing. Raised in Glasgow’s working-class Pollok area, his upbringing deeply influenced his creative voice, shaping his distinct blend of social commentary and storytelling.

Loki first made waves in the Scottish hip-hop scene with his 2014 album Government Issue Music Protest (GIMP), a thought-provoking work set in a dystopian Scotland in 2034. The album highlighted his talent for blending futuristic narratives with sharp reflections on contemporary societal issues. His 2017 follow-up album Trigger Warning continued this trend, diving into the complexities of modern life, from politics to inequality, and further solidifying his place as a pioneering artist in the genre.

Beyond music, McGarvey has made a significant impact as an author and broadcaster. His 2017 book Poverty Safari: Understanding the Anger of Britain’s Underclass won the Orwell Prize, offering a powerful exploration of class and inequality in the UK. In 2022, he followed this with The Social Distance Between Us, which examined the disconnect between political elites and the wider public.

Loki’s activism extends beyond his artistic work. In 2015, he served as a “rapper-in-residence” with Scotland’s Violence Reduction Unit, using his platform to reach out to at-risk youth with anti-violence messages. His ongoing dedication to social justice was further evident in his 2022 BBC Reith Lecture on “Freedom from Want,” underscoring his role as a key voice in the conversation on societal change.
