Sir Robert Bryson Hall II, professionally known as Logic, was born on January 22, 1990, in Gaithersburg, Maryland. He is a prominent American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer. Logic has made significant contributions to the music industry, known for his introspective lyrics and diverse musical influences.
Logic began his music career with the release of his debut mixtape, Psychological: The Mixtape, in December 2009, under the name Psychological. He later shortened his stage name to Logic, marking the start of a successful journey in hip-hop. His early work gained traction with the release of the Young Sinatra mixtape series, particularly its third installment, Young Sinatra: Welcome to Forever (2013). This mixtape received critical acclaim and played a pivotal role in securing his recording contract with Def Jam Recordings.
Logic’s debut studio album, Under Pressure (2014), was a significant milestone, peaking within the top five of the U.S. Billboard 200 and earning platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). His second album, The Incredible True Story (2015), continued this success, also reaching the top five on the Billboard 200.
However, it was his third album, Everybody (2017), that brought Logic his greatest mainstream recognition. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and was supported by the hit single “1-800-273-8255,” featuring Alessia Cara and Khalid. This song, named after the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, was praised for its impactful message and peaked in the top three of the Billboard Hot 100.
Logic’s subsequent albums, YSIV (2018) and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2019), continued to build on his commercial success. The latter featured the single “Homicide,” which included a high-profile collaboration with Eminem and peaked at number five on the Hot 100. Following the release of No Pressure (2020), Logic announced his retirement from music, but his career saw a revival with the mixtape Bobby Tarantino III (2021). His seventh studio album, Vinyl Days (2022), was his final project with Def Jam. Logic’s eighth album, College Park (2023), marked his return to the music scene as an independent artist.
Logic’s music spans genres including hip-hop, rap, and pop, often incorporating elements of soul and funk. His sound is characterized by introspective and socially conscious lyrics, influenced by a diverse array of artists such as A Tribe Called Quest, Mos Def, OutKast, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Drake, Eminem, and the Wu-Tang Clan. He has been influenced by films as well, particularly those by Quentin Tarantino.
In addition to his music career, Logic has ventured into literature with the novel Supermarket (2019), which was accompanied by a soundtrack album of the same name. Although the book and soundtrack received mixed reviews, the novel became a New York Times Best Seller. He also published a memoir, This Bright Future, in 2021. As a pioneer in digital engagement, Logic is signed exclusively with Twitch, making him the first musician to do so.
Logic’s persona is heavily influenced by Frank Sinatra, whom he cites as his main inspiration. This influence is evident in his “RattPack” (a play on Sinatra’s “Rat Pack”) and his self-described persona as “Young Sinatra.” His appreciation for a wide range of musical styles and his ability to blend these influences into his work have solidified his position as a distinctive voice in contemporary hip-hop.
