About Lil Nas X
Montero Lamar Hill, widely recognized by his stage name Lil Nas X, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and media personality born on April 9, 1999, in Lithia Springs, Georgia, near Atlanta. Raised in a family that later moved to Austell, Georgia, Lil Nas X’s early life was marked by his parents’ divorce when he was just six years old. Initially living with his mother and grandmother in Atlanta’s Bankhead Courts housing project, he later moved in with his father, a gospel singer, which he later acknowledged as a crucial decision that kept him away from negative influences.
From a young age, Lil Nas X was deeply connected to the digital world, immersing himself in the burgeoning culture of internet memes and social media. This digital fluency would later play a significant role in his rise to fame. His passion for music began early, learning to play the trumpet in elementary school and becoming first chair by junior high, though he eventually abandoned it due to concerns about appearing uncool.
After graduating from Lithia Springs High School in 2017, Lil Nas X briefly attended the University of West Georgia, where he majored in computer science. However, his desire to pursue music led him to drop out after just a year. During this period, he lived with his sister and worked various jobs, including stints at Zaxby’s restaurants and Six Flags Over Georgia, while he focused on building his music career.
Lil Nas X’s breakthrough came in early 2019 with the release of his country rap single “Old Town Road.” The song’s unique blend of country and trap music, combined with its viral popularity on platforms like TikTok, propelled it to unprecedented success. “Old Town Road” topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart for a record-breaking 19 weeks, becoming the longest-running number-one song since the chart’s inception. During this period, Lil Nas X publicly came out as gay, making history as the first artist to do so while having a number-one record.
Following the monumental success of “Old Town Road,” Lil Nas X signed with Columbia Records and released his debut EP, 7, which included the hits “Panini” and “Rodeo.” Both tracks enjoyed significant commercial success, with “Panini” peaking at number five on the Billboard Hot 100.
In 2021, Lil Nas X released his debut studio album, Montero, which further established him as a formidable force in the music industry. The album, which peaked at number two on the Billboard 200, featured the chart-topping singles “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” and “Industry Baby” (featuring Jack Harlow). The album’s bold and unapologetically queer visuals, coupled with Lil Nas X’s candidness about his sexuality, resonated with a global audience and earned him widespread acclaim, including a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year.
Throughout his career, Lil Nas X has been recognized for his innovative approach to music and his impactful social media presence. He has received numerous accolades, including two Grammy Awards, five Billboard Music Awards, and multiple MTV Video Music Awards. His hit single “Old Town Road” remains one of the highest-certified songs in U.S. history, with 17 platinum certifications.
Lil Nas X’s musical style is eclectic, incorporating elements of hip hop, pop rap, country rap, and rock. He cites LGBTQ artists like Frank Ocean and Tyler, the Creator as inspirations, along with mainstream influences such as Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, and Drake. His ability to blend genres and push boundaries has made him a trailblazer in the music industry and a role model for LGBTQ artists worldwide.
