Laura Jane Grace

Laura Jane Grace, born Thomas James Gabel on November 8, 1980, in Fort Benning, Georgia, is a pioneering American musician and the lead vocalist, guitarist, and founder of the punk rock band Against Me! Her music has had a lasting influence on the punk scene, with a sound that blends raw emotion and political commentary.

Growing up, Grace’s family moved frequently due to her father’s military career, living in various places like Texas, Germany, and Italy. At just eight years old, she bought her first guitar with money earned from mowing lawns and began teaching herself to play. This early passion for music led to the formation of Against Me! in her teenage years in Naples, Florida. Over the years, the band has released iconic albums like “Reinventing Axl Rose” (2002) and “Transgender Dysphoria Blues” (2014), with the latter album deeply reflecting Grace’s personal journey with gender identity.

In 2012, Grace made a groundbreaking revelation, publicly coming out as a transgender woman, adopting the name Laura Jane Grace. This moment not only marked a personal milestone but also had a profound impact on the music community, further influencing her songwriting and activism.

Grace is a staunch advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and frequently addresses issues of gender identity and societal expectations in her music. In March 2025, she performed at a Bernie Sanders rally, debuting the provocative song “Your God (God’s D-k),” which sparked controversy but also showcased her commitment to challenging societal norms through art.
