Lapiz Conciente

Avelino Junior Figueroa Rodríguez, better known by his stage name Lapiz Conciente, was born on January 24, 1983, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. As a pivotal figure in the Dominican rap scene, Lapiz Conciente has been instrumental in shaping the country’s hip-hop landscape. Raised in a challenging environment, Figueroa experienced a tumultuous childhood marked by personal hardships. He was brought up by his grandmother, Paulina Rodríguez de Jesús, a domestic worker and nurse, following the death of his mother when he was just 21 years old. Despite these difficulties, his grandmother’s support and his own resilience fueled his passion for music.

At the young age of 10, Figueroa was introduced to hip-hop through American rapper Vico C, which sparked his interest in the genre. By the time he was 14, he had already embarked on his professional rap career, initially joining the urban merengue groups Los Warriors and El Proyecto. These early experiences laid the groundwork for his future success in the Dominican hip-hop scene.

In 2008, Lapiz Conciente began to make waves with his music, releasing tracks on YouTube that garnered significant attention. His 2009 mixtape, *Ráfaga de Plomo*, showcased his emerging talent and set the stage for his future endeavors. The following year, he collaborated with Toxic Crow on the single “CAPEA EL DOUGH,” which was well-received and cemented his reputation as a key figure in Dominican hip-hop. His debut singles, “Yo Soy Papa” and “Yo No Te Quiero Perder,” further established his presence in the industry, with the latter’s music video accumulating over 39 million views on YouTube.

Lapiz Conciente’s breakthrough came in 2014 with the release of “Si No Te Quisiera,” a collaboration with Juan Magán and Belinda. This track achieved Gold Record status and amassed 300 million views on YouTube, marking a significant milestone in his career. The success of this single helped solidify his position as a leading artist in the Latin urban music scene.

In 2016, Lapiz Conciente released his album *Latidos*, which featured collaborations with prominent artists such as Vico C, Natti Natasha, Belinda, J Álvarez, Black Jonas Point, and Musicologo The Libro. The album’s success led to a contract with Sony Music Latin, under which he released his second studio album, *Cicatrices*. This album debuted strongly in both the Dominican Republic and the United States, showcasing his collaborations with artists like Magic Juan, Nacho, Leslie Grace, Xaxo, El B, and Negro HP.

Lapiz Conciente continued to make headlines in 2020 with a highly publicized rap battle against Dominican rapper Mozart la Para, where he introduced new singles like “El Descanso Eterno,” “Tú No Tá,” and “9 Días.” His involvement in the song “Culpable” by Romeo Santos in 2022 further demonstrated his versatility and continued relevance in the Latin music scene.

Beyond his musical achievements, Lapiz Conciente is known for his personal dedication to his family and faith. He had a long-term romantic relationship with Niurka, with whom he has two children, and he studied accounting, reflecting his diverse interests and skills. His stage name, derived from a playful correction of his grandmother’s spelling, has become a symbol of his unique contribution to the genre. Lapiz Conciente remains a prominent figure in Latin music, celebrated for his pioneering role in Dominican hip-hop and his enduring impact on the genre.
