L-Gante

Elian Ángel Valenzuela, known by his stage name L-Gante, is an Argentine rapper and cumbia artist who has made a significant impact on the Latin American music scene. Born on April 5, 2000, in General Rodríguez, a district in the Greater Buenos Aires area, L-Gante grew up in a working-class environment. Raised by a single mother, Valenzuela has often spoken about his absent father and the challenges he faced during his youth. Despite these hardships, his love for music blossomed early, and by the age of 15, he began recording his own vocals using a government-provided computer.

L-Gante’s musical career started in 2017 when he uploaded his first tracks to YouTube. While his initial efforts didn’t bring widespread recognition, his persistence began to pay off in 2018 when his single Uno más uno gained traction, accumulating over 2 million streams on Spotify. This track marked his first taste of success, but it wasn’t until 2020 that his career truly skyrocketed. His collaboration with Papu DJ on the song L-Gante RKT brought him into the spotlight, blending Argentine cumbia with reggaeton and highlighting the underground party culture in working-class neighborhoods during the COVID-19 pandemic. The track reached number 2 on the Argentine Billboard Hot 100 and catapulted him into mainstream fame.

In March 2021, L-Gante’s career took another leap forward with the release of Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 38 in collaboration with renowned producer Bizarrap. The track was initially delayed after L-Gante was detained for public disturbances, but once released, it became an instant sensation. The video garnered over 3 million views in less than 24 hours and topped the Argentine Billboard Hot 100 chart, where it remained at number one for seven consecutive weeks. This breakout moment solidified L-Gante’s place as a major player in the Latin American music industry.

Following the success of his session with Bizarrap, L-Gante continued to release hit after hit. In April 2021, he teamed up with Damas Gratis for a remix of his earlier track Pistola. His singles Visionario and Internacional Love 420, a collaboration with reggae artist Fidel Nadal, further cemented his unique style. His fusion of cumbia and reggaeton, which he dubs “Cumbia 420,” became a defining feature of his music, with marihuana playing a central role in the themes and lyrics of his songs. Valenzuela has often stated that his goal was to create a sound that felt distinctly Argentine, rather than being heavily influenced by foreign genres like Latin trap, although trap elements are still present in his work.

L-Gante’s rise to fame has been swift, and his influence has extended beyond music. In 2021, he was named “Artist of the Month” by Billboard Argentina, gracing the cover of the magazine. His collaborations with artists such as Dillom and his appearance on Dillom’s debut album Post Mortem have further expanded his reach in the Argentine music scene. Known for his raw and unapologetic style, L-Gante’s music speaks to the experiences of working-class youth, blending the sounds of the streets with infectious rhythms that have earned him millions of followers across platforms.
