Kublai Khan TX, formerly known as Kublai Khan, is an American metalcore band hailing from Sherman, Texas. Formed in the summer of 2009, the band has made a significant impact on the metalcore scene, delivering heavy, aggressive music that blends elements of 1990s metallic hardcore with modern metalcore intensity. Over the years, they have released five studio albums and two EPs, gaining a dedicated following with their crushing breakdowns, downtuned guitars, and socially conscious lyrics.
The band self-released their first EP, Youth War, in 2010, which established their aggressive sound and earned them early recognition in the underground metal scene. Their momentum increased when they signed with Artery Recordings in February 2014. Soon after, Kublai Khan released their debut full-length album, Balancing Survival and Happiness, on April 29, 2014. The album was well-received by both fans and critics, earning a spot on Alternative Press’s list of “The Best Albums of 2014 so far.” The record showcased the band’s signature style of intense, metallic hardcore with socially aware themes, helping them carve out a distinct niche in the metalcore genre.
Building on this success, Kublai Khan released their sophomore album, New Strength, on November 27, 2015. The album continued to explore themes of societal and personal struggles, with tracks addressing issues like racism, organized religion, and social justice. In July 2017, the band signed with Rise Records and later that year, on September 29, released their third album, Nomad. This album saw Kublai Khan solidify their place within the metalcore community with its heavy sound and unapologetically raw lyrics, marking a turning point in their career as their fanbase expanded.
The release of Absolute in 2019 further cemented Kublai Khan’s reputation as one of the leading bands in the genre. Their music had evolved, becoming more refined without losing the visceral aggression that initially drew fans to them. They continued to address topics like depression, police brutality, and violence against women, infusing their music with a sense of purpose and activism.
In 2022, Kublai Khan released the EP Lowest Form of Animal, which featured one of their most successful songs, “Swan Song” (featuring Scott Vogel). This EP continued the band’s tradition of delivering hard-hitting music with poignant, socially relevant lyrics. The band’s fanbase grew as they released singles like “Theory of Mind” in 2023, which became one of their most popular tracks to date, and “Low Tech” in 2024, which received a similar reception.
Kublai Khan TX’s fifth studio album, Exhibition of Prowess, was released on September 20, 2024. The album continued to push the boundaries of the band’s sound, incorporating new elements while staying true to their core style of heavy breakdowns and downtuned guitars. With each release, Kublai Khan TX has maintained their relevance in the metalcore scene, continuing to deliver music that resonates with fans both musically and lyrically.
The band’s lineup, consisting of Matt Honeycutt on vocals, Nolan Ashley on guitar, Eric English on bass, and Isaac Lamb on drums, has been instrumental in creating the cohesive, brutal sound that defines Kublai Khan TX. Their combination of relentless energy, thought-provoking lyrics, and crushing riffs has ensured their lasting impact on the metalcore scene.
