Thomas Knak, born on February 7, 1973, in Copenhagen, Denmark, is a pioneering electronic musician whose work has left a significant mark on the ambient and electronic music scenes. Known both under his own name and the alias Opiate, Knak has been a driving force in shaping the electronic music landscape since the late 1990s. His innovative approach to sound design and composition has influenced many in the genre, making him a standout figure in experimental music.

In 1999, Knak released his debut album Objects for an Ideal Home under the Opiate moniker. That same year, he launched the record label Hobby Industries, which quickly became a platform for other avant-garde artists such as Goodiepal, Dub Tractor, and Spinform. This initiative not only cemented his role as a musician but also as a curator and promoter of experimental electronic music, further establishing his reputation in the industry.

Knak’s collaborative spirit has also been a defining feature of his career. Notably, he produced tracks for Björk’s critically acclaimed 2001 album Vespertine, and he’s also remixed music for prominent artists like Bomb the Bass and Coldcut.
