About King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard is a wildly inventive rock band hailing from Melbourne, Australia. Formed in 2010, the group has built a cult-like following thanks to their fearless genre experimentation, mind-bending live shows, and an unmatched work ethic. The current lineup includes frontman Stu Mackenzie, Ambrose Kenny-Smith, Cook Craig, Joey Walker, Lucas Harwood, and Michael Cavanagh—a crew of musical shapeshifters who treat every new album as a chance to dive into uncharted sonic territory.
Early on, King Gizz mixed garage rock and surf influences, but it didn’t take long for them to branch into psychedelic jams, prog rock, jazz fusion (Quarters!), and even breezy acoustic folk (Paper Mâché Dream Balloon). Their 2016 release, Nonagon Infinity, was a major breakthrough—praised for its relentless energy and looping structure, and earning them the ARIA Award for Best Hard Rock or Heavy Metal Album.
In 2017, they turned heads again by releasing five full-length albums in a single year, including Flying Microtonal Banana, which kicked off a trilogy of albums exploring microtonal tuning. Over the years, they’ve continued to push boundaries, dabbling in thrash metal, synth-pop, and concept albums with lyrics often rooted in climate anxiety, dystopia, and the rich mythos fans lovingly call the “Gizzverse.”
By 2022, they repeated their five-album feat—dropping three albums in a single month. Their 26th album, Flight b741, arrived in 2024, proving that even after a decade of boundary-pushing music, King Gizzard shows no signs of slowing down.
