Kasane Teto (重音テト) is a Japanese virtual singer who began as an April Fools’ Day joke but has since become a beloved figure in the vocal synthesis world. Created on April 1, 2008, by users of the Japanese textboard 2channel, Teto was originally introduced as a fictional Vocaloid character. Her name, “Kasane,” means “heavy sound,” while “Teto” comes from the song “Tetopettenson,” a playful reference that helped spark her popularity.

Though initially conceived as a prank, Teto’s quirky character design—a lively girl with red, curly pigtails and a mischievous attitude—quickly captured the hearts of the online community. She was given a voice by Japanese singer Oyamano Mayo and became one of the most recognized characters in the UTAU voice synthesis software. Over time, Teto’s abilities expanded, and she was released for TALQu in 2021 and Synthesizer V AI in 2023, marking significant milestones in her evolution.
