JEON SOMI (전소미)

Ennik Somi Douma, known professionally as JEON SOMI, was born on March 9, 2001, in Windsor, Ontario, to a South Korean mother and a Canadian father of Dutch and German descent. When she was six months old, her family moved to Seoul, South Korea, where she grew up. Her early life was marked by cultural challenges, including bullying and discrimination due to her mixed ethnicity. Despite these difficulties, she found solace in music, drawing inspiration from artists like Rihanna and Park Bom of 2NE1.

SOMI began auditioning for entertainment companies at a young age and eventually joined JYP Entertainment’s trainee program in 2014. She gained significant attention in 2016 by participating in the reality survival show Produce 101, where she finished in first place, earning a spot in the project girl group I.O.I. The group achieved widespread success with their debut and various releases, but their time was short-lived, disbanding in January 2017 after a year of promotions. During this period, she also engaged in solo activities, including collaborations with other artists and appearances on television.

Following I.O.I’s disbandment, she continued to pursue her career under JYP Entertainment, but her future direction remained uncertain. In 2018, she left JYP and signed with The Black Label, a subsidiary of YG Entertainment. This move marked a new chapter in her career, with her citing her desire for artistic growth and a more tailored approach to her music as key reasons for the change.

In June 2019, she made her solo debut with the single “Birthday,” which showcased her vibrant and youthful energy. The song was well-received, and its music video quickly gained millions of views. Over the next few years, she continued to build her solo career, releasing hit singles such as “What You Waiting For” in 2020, which earned her first music show win, and “Dumb Dumb” in 2021, which became her first top-ten single in South Korea.

Her success continued with the release of her first studio album, XOXO, in October 2021. The album featured several of her previously released singles and solidified her presence as a leading solo artist in the K-pop industry. In 2023, she achieved her first top-five single in South Korea with “Fast Forward,” further cementing her status as a prominent figure in the music scene.

Beyond music, SOMI has been recognized for her role as a multicultural representative, even participating in a ceremony commemorating the Korean Declaration of Independence in 2021. Her career, marked by resilience and adaptability, reflects her growth from a reality show contestant to a successful solo artist with a global fanbase. Today, SOMI continues to captivate audiences with her unique blend of Korean and Western influences, making her a standout artist in the ever-evolving world of K-pop.
