James McAlister

James McAlister is a highly skilled American drummer, composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Now based in Los Angeles, he has carved out a notable career working with some of the most influential artists across various genres, from indie rock to contemporary classical music.

McAlister began his musical journey as a member of the indie rock band Ester Drang, known for its atmospheric and experimental sound. His early work with the band And There Stand Empires also showcased his broad musical range, further cementing his reputation as a versatile musician.

After relocating to Los Angeles, McAlister expanded his musical horizons, particularly with his collaboration and touring work with Sufjan Stevens. Notably, he contributed his expertise in rhythm and sound texture to Stevens’ “Carrie & Lowell” tour, enhancing the live shows with his innovative approach.

Beyond touring, McAlister has built a diverse portfolio of studio work. He has collaborated with an impressive array of artists, including The National, Nico Muhly, Bryce Dessner, Aaron Dessner, Bill Frisell, and Mike Andrews, contributing his drumming, production, and multi-instrumentalist talents to their projects.

In 2017, McAlister released Planetarium, a collaborative album with Sufjan Stevens, Nico Muhly, and Bryce Dessner. The album highlights his unique ability to merge classical compositions with modern electronic influences.
