About IZA
Isabela Cristina Correia de Lima Lima, widely known by her stage name IZA, is a Brazilian singer, songwriter, and dancer who has risen to international prominence for her powerful vocals and dynamic stage presence. Born on September 3, 1990, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, IZA grew up in a family deeply rooted in the arts, with her mother being a music and arts teacher and her father a naval soldier. Her early life was marked by a move to Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, where her father was stationed. It was during these formative years that IZA began to experience the harsh realities of racism, being one of the few Black children in a predominantly white private school. These experiences would later influence her music and activism.
From a young age, IZA found solace and expression in music, particularly within the church where she started singing at the age of 14. Her passion for music continued to grow, and by the time she returned to Rio de Janeiro at 19, she was determined to pursue a career in the arts. IZA enrolled in the Publicity and Propaganda course at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), where she graduated in 2013. During this time, she began working as a video editor, a job that allowed her to hone her technical skills while still pursuing her passion for music on the side.
In 2015, IZA took a bold step towards her dreams by launching a YouTube channel where she posted cover songs of popular artists such as Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Sam Smith. Her soulful renditions quickly caught the attention of music lovers and industry professionals alike. Her unique voice and charismatic performances set her apart from other emerging artists, and it wasn’t long before she was discovered by Warner Music Brasil in 2016. Signing with the label marked a turning point in her career, giving her the platform she needed to reach a wider audience.
IZA’s debut album, Dona de Mim, was released in 2018 and showcased her versatility as a singer and songwriter. The album received critical acclaim, earning a nomination for the Latin Grammy Award for Best Portuguese Language Contemporary Pop Album. Songs from the album, such as “Pesadão” and “Ginga,” became anthems in Brazil, and IZA quickly became a household name. Her music, characterized by a blend of pop, soul, and Brazilian rhythms, resonated with fans across the globe.
Beyond her musical achievements, IZA has become a prominent figure in Brazil’s entertainment industry. In 2021, she was recognized by Time magazine as one of the Next Generation Leaders, highlighting her influence and impact. IZA has also made history as the first Black Brazilian singer to perform on the main stage at Rock in Rio, one of the world’s largest music festivals.
In 2023, IZA released her much-anticipated album AFRODHIT, which features 13 tracks that further solidify her position as a leading voice in Brazilian pop music. Despite her rapid rise to fame, IZA remains grounded, using her platform to advocate for social issues, including racial equality and feminism. She is also open about her personal life, sharing her journey through love, heartbreak, and self-discovery with her fans.
As a trailblazer in the music industry, IZA continues to break barriers and inspire a new generation of artists with her talent, resilience, and dedication to her craft.
