About Guru Randhawa
Gursharanjot Randhawa, known professionally as Guru Randhawa, has become a household name in the Indian music scene with his distinctive blend of Punjabi, Bhangra, Indi-pop, and Bollywood music. Born on August 30, 1991, in Noorpur, a small village in the Gurdaspur district of Punjab, India, Randhawa’s journey from a simple village boy to one of the most fashionable and celebrated artists in the country is nothing short of inspiring.
Growing up in a village without cable TV, young Guru spent much of his time watching Doordarshan and listening to the radio. His early exposure to music came from these sources, as well as Pakistani radio stations that his town could pick up due to its proximity to the border. Despite his reserved nature, Guru was never shy when it came to singing. Inspired by legendary artists like Babbu Maan, Gurdas Maan, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and Diljit Dosanjh, he began singing in the third grade and by seventh grade, he was already writing his own songs.
Guru Randhawa’s educational journey was as important to him as his musical aspirations. He completed his schooling in Gurdaspur and aspired to move to Delhi for further studies. Despite financial constraints, he eventually made it to Delhi, where he completed an MBA. His commitment to education was driven by a desire to fully understand professional contracts, a knowledge he felt many Punjabi singers lacked.
Randhawa’s music career officially began in December 2012 with the song “Same Girl” in collaboration with Arjun. Although it did not achieve much success, it marked the beginning of his musical journey. His big break came in 2015 with the release of the single “Patola” in collaboration with Bohemia. This song garnered significant attention, accumulating over 368 million views on YouTube, and won the award for best Punjabi Duo. This was followed by the release of several blockbuster songs in 2016, including “Yaar Mod Do,” “Tu Meri Rani,” and the immensely popular “Suit,” which currently holds over 478 million views on YouTube.
Guru Randhawa’s Bollywood debut came with the recreation of his track “Suit” for the film Hindi Medium in 2017. This marked his entry into the Bollywood music scene, leading to further hits like “Lagdi Hai Thaai” for the movie Simran and the recreation of “Tu Meri Rani” for Tumhari Sulu. His tracks “High Rated Gabru” and “Lahore” became some of the most viewed songs on YouTube, each surpassing a billion views.
In 2019, Randhawa released “Slowly Slowly,” his first international collaboration featuring Pitbull. The music video amassed 38 million views within 24 hours of its release. He also turned producer with the Punjabi film Tara Mira. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, he released “Satnam Waheguru,” a soothing track that resonated with his audience during challenging times.
Guru Randhawa’s popularity soared with songs like “Mehendi Wale Haath,” “Doob Gaye,” and “Dance Meri Rani.” His track “Nain Bengali” made history by becoming the first Indian song to cross 70 million views in 24 hours and 100 million views in 50 hours. In 2022, he continued to deliver hits such as “Punjabiyan Di Dhee” and “Designer” with Yo Yo Honey Singh, further cementing his status as a music sensation.
From his humble beginnings to his rise as one of India’s most fashionable and popular singers, Guru Randhawa’s journey is a testament to his talent, hard work, and unwavering dedication to his craft.
