Grupo Frontera is an American regional Mexican band hailing from Edinburg, Texas. The band comprises Adelaido “Payo” Solís III (vocals, bajo quinto), Juan Javier Cantú (vocals, accordion), Julian Peña Jr. (congas), Alberto “Beto” Acosta (bajo quinto), Carlos Guerrero (drums), and Brian Ortega (bass guitar). Formed in early 2022, Grupo Frontera began performing at weddings and parties, which led to their debut EP, En Vivo, Vol. 1, in March 2022. This release included covers of classics such as Vicente Fernández’s “Estos Celos” and Diego Verdaguer’s “La Ladrona”.
A month later, they released their second EP featuring a cover of Morat’s “No Se Va,” which went viral on TikTok and charted by the year’s end. In December 2022, their collaboration with Fuerza Regida on “Bebé Dame” hit number one on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart and peaked at number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking their first top 40 hit. Original bassist Carlos Zamora left in late 2022 and was replaced by Brian Ortega.
In May 2023, Grupo Frontera achieved their first top five hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Un x100to,” a collaboration with Bad Bunny. This success prompted the announcement of a 23-date tour beginning mid-2023. Billboard highlighted the band’s role in the rise of the regional Mexican genre. Known for their norteño cumbias, their full-length debut album El Comienzo, released in August 2023, showcased their versatility across various regional Mexican styles and beyond.
Their second album, Jugando a Que No Pasa Nada, released on May 10, 2024, featured a diverse mix of genres including country, R&B, electronic, and bachata. The album included guest appearances by Christian Nodal, Maluma, Morat, and Nicki Nicole. Hailing from the Texas Valley near the Mexican border, Grupo Frontera quickly rose to fame with their viral cover of “No Se Va” by Morat, leading to chart success on the Hot 100.
In 2023, their collaboration with Bad Bunny on “Un x100to” became a top five hit, followed by collaborations with Peso Pluma on “Tulum” and Ke Personajes on “Ojitos Rojos.” These tracks appeared on their debut album El Comienzo, produced by Edgar “Edge” Barrera, which entered the Top 200 at number 33 and reached the Top Ten on various streaming charts. By the end of 2023, Grupo Frontera had placed eight singles on the Hot 100.
In early 2024, they released “Quédate Bebé,” enhancing their Latin American fanbase. Their collaboration with Shakira on “(Entre Paréntesis)” from her album Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran garnered over 100 million streams in its first month. This partnership extended to the non-album single “Esto Ya No Da Más.” In May 2024, Jugando a Que No Pasa Nada featured the hit “Ya Pedo Quien Sabe” with Christian Nodal, which topped the Mexican Regional charts, and other collaborations including “Por Qué Será” with Maluma, “Desquite” with Nicki Nicole, and “Los Dos” with Morat.
Grupo Frontera’s rapid rise and diverse musical collaborations have solidified their place in the regional Mexican music scene, continuing to push boundaries and gain international acclaim.
