About GIMS

Gandhi Djuna, better known by his stage name GIMS, is a Congolese-born singer, rapper, producer, and songwriter who has become one of the most influential artists in French and European music. Born on May 6, 1986, in Kinshasa, Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo). GIMS comes from a family deeply rooted in music; his father, Djanana Djuna, was a singer in Papa Wemba’s legendary Viva La Musica troupe. GIMS’s early life was marked by hardship; after moving to France as an undocumented immigrant at the age of two, he grew up in various foster homes and squats, enduring a challenging childhood. Despite these difficulties, he developed a passion for music, which became his path to success.

GIMS first gained prominence as a member of the French hip-hop group Sexion d’Assaut, with whom he built a strong reputation for his lyrical prowess and dynamic performances. His solo career took off in 2013 with the release of his debut album, Subliminal, which was a commercial triumph, selling over a million copies in France. The album’s lead single, “J’me tire,” topped the French charts, establishing GIMS as a solo star. His music is characterized by its blend of hip-hop, pop, and dance influences, which has allowed him to appeal to a broad audience. His versatility in both rapping and singing, along with his production skills, has set him apart in the French music scene.

Following the success of Subliminal, GIMS released his second album, Mon cÅ“ur avait raison, in 2015. The album was divided into two parts, showcasing his dual artistic identity: one side focused on urban pop and R&B, while the other embraced his roots in rap. The album was a critical and commercial success, reaching number one in France and Belgium. The hit single “Est-ce que tu m’aimes?” became a pan-European success, further solidifying his status as a leading figure in contemporary French music.

In 2018, GIMS released his third album, Ceinture noire, which featured collaborations with international artists like Lil Wayne and Vianney. The album’s success was immense, staying at number one on the French charts for eleven weeks. Tracks like “La Même,” which became the most performed song in France in 2018, showcased Gims’ ability to create music that resonates deeply with listeners.

GIMS’ influence extends beyond music. He founded his own record label, Monstre Marin Corporation (MMC), under Universal Music France, and has been involved in various business ventures, including launching his own clothing line, Vortex. His influence is also global, as evidenced by his collaboration with international stars such as Sia, Pitbull, and Sting, and his participation in the 2022 FIFA World Cup with the song “Arhbo” alongside Ozuna.

Throughout his career, GIMS has faced criticism from some quarters, particularly from those who believe his music has strayed too far from his rap roots. Despite this, he remains one of the most successful and versatile artists in French music, with over 5 million records sold. GIMS continues to push boundaries, blending genres and cultures, while his life story stands as a testament to resilience and artistic evolution.
