Future Islands

Future Islands, an American synth-pop band hailing from Baltimore, Maryland, has made a significant mark on the music scene with their distinctive sound and dynamic performances. The band, consisting of Gerrit Welmers (keyboards and programming), William Cashion (bass, acoustic and electric guitars), Samuel T. Herring (lyrics and vocals), and Michael Lowry (percussion), was formed in January 2006. The origins of Future Islands trace back to the performance art college band Art Lord & the Self-Portraits, which included Welmers, Cashion, and Herring. The addition of drummer Erick Murillo completed the lineup, setting the stage for what would become Future Islands.

The album’s lead single, “Seasons (Waiting on You),” garnered widespread acclaim and was named the best song of 2014 by Pitchfork and NME. The band’s performance of “Seasons (Waiting on You)” on the Late Show with David Letterman in March 2014 became the most-viewed video on the show’s YouTube channel, further propelling their popularity.

Future Islands’ success continued with their subsequent releases, including the critically acclaimed album In Evening Air in 2010, and Singles in 2014. Their music, characterized by Herring’s emotive lyrics and energetic stage presence, resonated deeply with audiences. Herring’s performances, known for their intensity and theatricality, have been a defining feature of the band’s live shows. This album reflected the personal challenges faced by Herring, including the dissolution of a long-distance relationship during the lockdowns. The release of People Who Aren’t There Anymore in January 2024 further showcased their resilience and ability to connect with audiences through their music.

Future Islands’ music style, often categorized as synth-pop, has been described by the band as “post-wave,” blending elements of new wave and post-punk. The members’ varied musical influences, from Kraftwerk and Joy Division to Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, have contributed to their unique sound.
