About Fontaines D.C.
Fontaines D.C., an Irish post-punk band, was formed in Dublin in 2014, comprised of Grian Chatten (vocals), Carlos O’Connell (guitar), Conor Curley (guitar), Conor Deegan III (bass), and Tom Coll (drums). The band members first met while attending the BIMM music college in Dublin, bonding over their mutual love of poetry and music. Initially performing and self-releasing singles, Fontaines D.C. built a local following before signing with Partisan Records in 2018.
Their debut album, Dogrel, was released on April 12, 2019, and garnered widespread acclaim. The album, named after Doggerel, a form of working-class Irish poetry, was praised for its raw, energetic sound and lyrical depth. It was celebrated as Album of the Year by Rough Trade and BBC Radio 6 Music, and was nominated for both the Mercury Prize and the Choice Music Prize. The success of Dogrel led to an extensive tour across Ireland, Europe, and North America, establishing the band as a significant force in the post-punk revival movement.
Following the success of Dogrel, Fontaines D.C. released their second studio album, A Hero’s Death, on July 31, 2020. Recorded amidst the band’s relentless touring schedule, the album continued their exploration of themes from their debut while incorporating new influences. The title track was a tribute to a fan who had passed away due to COVID-19, and the album’s release was marked by the single’s poignant music video featuring actor Aidan Gillen. Despite the pandemic impacting live performances, A Hero’s Death was nominated for Best Rock Album at the 2021 Grammy Awards and debuted at number two on the UK Albums Chart.
Their third album, Skinty Fia, released on April 22, 2022, marked a significant milestone for the band, reaching number one on both the UK Albums Chart and the Irish Albums Chart. The album, which includes singles like “Jackie Down the Line” and “Roman Holiday,” was noted for its political themes and deeper lyrical content. The success of Skinty Fia was accompanied by notable festival performances, including appearances at Primavera Sound and Glastonbury.
In 2023, Grian Chatten released his debut solo album, Chaos for the Fly, showcasing his versatility and individual artistic vision. The band also announced a collaborative EP with Massive Attack and Young Fathers titled Ceasefire, aimed at raising funds for Doctors Without Borders in Gaza. This project highlighted Fontaines D.C.’s ongoing commitment to social and political issues.
Their fourth album, Romance, was released on August 23, 2024. The album, produced by James Ford, continues to evolve their sound while maintaining their distinctive post-punk edge. The lead single, “Starburster,” was released in conjunction with the album announcement, further cementing the band’s reputation for innovative and engaging music.
Fontaines D.C.’s journey from local performers to international acclaim reflects their significant impact on the post-punk genre. Their combination of poetic lyricism, dynamic live performances, and a commitment to addressing contemporary issues has solidified their place as one of the most influential bands in modern rock music.
