FLO is a British R&B girl group that has rapidly risen to prominence in the music industry, capturing hearts with their harmonious vocals, nostalgic yet fresh sound, and undeniable talent. The group consists of three members: Jorja Douglas, Stella Quaresma, and Renée Downer, each bringing their unique backgrounds and musical influences to create a cohesive and dynamic trio. Formed in London in 2019, FLO has quickly established themselves as one of the most exciting new acts in contemporary R&B, drawing comparisons to iconic girl groups like TLC and Destiny’s Child.
Stella Quaresma, one of the group’s members, was born in Kingston upon Thames but spent much of her early childhood in Mozambique before returning to the UK. She grew up immersed in African music, with later influences from Etta James and Amy Winehouse, which have shaped her rich vocal style. Quaresma attended the Sylvia Young Theatre School in London, where she met Renée Downer, another future member of FLO. Downer, born and raised in North London, shared a similar passion for music, having grown up listening to a mix of R&B, house, and gospel music. Jorja Douglas, the third member, was born in Germany and moved to Hertfordshire as a baby. With a background in competitive singing—she won the second series of the CBBC competition Got What It Takes? in 2017—Douglas brought a strong R&B influence to the group, shaped by the music her mother introduced her to.
The formation of FLO in 2019 was a turning point for each of the members. Quaresma and Downer reconnected through their shared history at the Sylvia Young Theatre School, and Douglas was discovered via her singing videos on Instagram. Their chemistry was immediate, and they quickly began working on music together, leading to the release of their debut single “Cardboard Box” in March 2022. Produced by MNEK, a British hitmaker known for his work with top-tier artists, the song was an instant success, gaining traction on social media and earning the group widespread attention. Its accompanying music video further solidified their aesthetic, which pays homage to the R&B and hip-hop visuals of the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Following the success of “Cardboard Box,” FLO released their debut EP, The Lead, in July 2022. The EP showcased their ability to blend modern production with classic R&B elements, earning them critical acclaim and a rapidly growing fanbase. The group’s sound is characterized by their tight vocal harmonies, catchy melodies, and a blend of old-school R&B with contemporary pop influences.
In 2023, FLO continued their upward trajectory with the release of their second EP, 3 of Us, and a series of high-profile performances, including appearances at major festivals and on television shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Tonight Show. Their collaboration with Missy Elliott on the single “Fly Girl” further highlighted their rising star status, as did their performance at the 2023 BET Awards, where they were nominated for three categories.
FLO’s achievements have not gone unnoticed in the industry. They topped the BBC’s Sound of 2023 poll, won the prestigious Brit Award for Rising Star, and were named Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Rookie of the Month. As they prepare for the release of their debut studio album, the group’s influence continues to grow, with fans eagerly anticipating what comes next for this talented trio. FLO’s ability to blend nostalgia with a modern twist makes them a standout act in today’s music scene, and they are poised for even greater success in the years to come.
