About Fahar
Fahar Al-Salih is an Iraqi-born artist whose work draws deeply from his multicultural background and life experiences. Born in 1964 in Belgrade to an Iraqi father and a Serbian mother, Fahar spent much of his early childhood in Kuwait. He cherishes memories of seaside views and summer trips to Yugoslavia and Baghdad, experiences that have had a lasting impact on his artistic perspective. These early years of movement and cultural blending shaped much of his creative identity.
Despite his natural talent for art, Fahar faced challenges in pursuing it as a career, especially in Kuwait during the 1970s and 1980s, where artistic aspirations were often seen as secondary to more traditional roles. At the age of 15, his drawing was selected to represent Kuwait at a UNICEF exhibition, but it was rejected due to his non-Kuwaiti background—a setback that momentarily stalled his artistic journey.
In 1984, amid political unrest, Fahar and his family moved to Vienna, Austria. Immersed in the city’s vibrant cultural life, Fahar reignited his passion for art, studying art history on his own. He later pursued formal education at the Bad Reichenhall Art Academy under renowned artists like Markus Lüpertz, Jerry Zeniuk, and Hermann Nitsch.
Now based in Karlsruhe, Germany, Fahar’s work reflects his bicultural heritage, often exploring themes of home, identity, and the fusion of European and Arab cultures. His art serves as a powerful bridge between diverse worlds, inviting viewers to connect with his personal story of belonging and the broader human experience of displacement.
