About Dorian
Dorian Gray is the captivating protagonist of Oscar Wilde’s classic 1890 novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray. Born into the English aristocracy, Dorian loses his parents at a young age and is raised by his cold and domineering grandfather, Lord Kelso. His striking beauty and air of innocence immediately capture the attention of artist Basil Hallward, who paints a portrait of Dorian—an artwork that soon takes on a life of its own.
After meeting the charming and cynical Lord Henry Wotton, Dorian becomes enchanted by a philosophy that glorifies youth, beauty, and indulgence above all else. In a moment of fear and vanity, he wishes that his portrait would age instead of him. To his astonishment, the wish is granted: while Dorian remains youthful and untouched by time, his portrait bears the marks of his moral decay.
Emboldened by his seemingly eternal beauty, Dorian plunges into a life of excess and cruelty. His callous treatment of actress Sibyl Vane leads to her tragic death, and from there, his descent only deepens. The once-pure portrait grows more grotesque with every sin he commits. When confronted by Basil about the rumors of his corruption, Dorian, in a fit of rage, murders him, sealing his descent into darkness.
Ultimately, haunted by guilt and unable to escape his conscience, Dorian tries to destroy the portrait—only to destroy himself. His death restores the painting to its original beauty, leaving behind a cautionary tale about vanity, corruption, and the price of living without accountability.
