Darius Scott, professionally known as DIXSON, is an American singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist whose diverse talent has made a significant impact on the music industry. Born to a pastor in Atlanta, Scott was immersed in music from an early age, learning to play 11 instruments in his church. His musical journey began at the tender age of five, impressing his family with a rendition of Fred Hammond’s “When the Spirit of the Lord.” This early exposure to music laid the foundation for his multifaceted career.
Scott attended the College of Wooster in Ohio, where he was a recipient of the prestigious Posse Foundation scholarship. While studying abroad in Paris and focusing on French business and fashion merchandising, Scott developed a self-designed major in arts and media management. Throughout his time at Wooster, Scott was involved in various musical ensembles, including the Wooster Chorus, The Wooster Fragments, and the Wooster Jazz Ensemble. He also served as music director of his on-campus band, Freddie Cool, and interned at MTV and the National Conference of Black Mayors. Additionally, Scott was a founding member of the streetwear brand Kith. Upon graduating in 2013, he moved to Texas to work as an executive at Neiman Marcus before transitioning to a full-time music career.
In 2014, Scott self-released his debut project Masterpiece, a Christian/Gospel album that explored the spiritual journey of a young man navigating faith and life’s challenges. His musical talents soon gained wider recognition when he appeared on Season 9 of The Voice, joining Pharrell Williams’ team and advancing to the live playoffs. This exposure helped Scott build connections in the industry, and he maintained a working relationship with Williams after the show.
In 2018, Scott released his electro-R&B album Young, which delved into the emotional and artistic struggles of a young adult finding their true voice. The album further showcased his versatility as both a musician and producer. His career took a major leap forward in 2019 when he contributed to Chance the Rapper’s album The Big Day. The following year, Scott arranged the acoustic version of Justin Bieber and Chance the Rapper’s collaboration “Holy,” further solidifying his place in the industry.
Scott’s big break came when he signed with Roc Nation and collaborated with Beyoncé on the Oscar- and Grammy-nominated song “Be Alive” for the King Richard film soundtrack. His work with Beyoncé continued on her 2022 album Renaissance, co-writing the tracks “Virgo’s Groove” and “Pure/Honey.” These collaborations cemented Scott’s reputation as a creative force in the industry.
In 2022, Scott released his fourth project, 004Daisy, which featured collaborations with artists like Tinashe, Sevyn Streeter, and Vic Mensa. He continued to expand his reach, contributing to Beyoncé’s 2024 album Cowboy Carter and co-writing or co-producing over 10 tracks for Kehlani’s albums Crash and While We Wait 2. His contributions to Flo’s debut album and Doechii’s mixtape further exemplified his wide-ranging influence across genres.
DIXSON’s ability to seamlessly blend gospel, R&B, and pop elements into his music has earned him a reputation as one of the most innovative and versatile artists of his generation.
