About Diego El Cigala

Diego El Cigala, born Diego Ramón Jiménez Salazar on December 27, 1968, in Madrid, Spain, is a celebrated flamenco singer whose distinct, emotionally charged voice and innovative approach have garnered him international recognition. Coming from a Romani family deeply rooted in music, El Cigala’s early experiences shaped his musical journey. He first performed in the vibrant flamenco clubs of Madrid’s El Rastro district, where he honed his craft. His unique vocal style earned him the nickname “El Cigala,” given by the legendary flamenco artist Camarón de la Isla, a tribute to his singular sound.

El Cigala’s breakthrough arrived with his 1998 debut album, Undebel, which cemented his place in the flamenco scene. However, it was his 2003 collaboration with Cuban pianist Bebo Valdés on Lágrimas Negras that brought him worldwide fame. The album seamlessly blended flamenco with Cuban bolero, creating a distinctive fusion that earned him critical acclaim and introduced his soulful interpretations to a global audience.

Throughout his career, El Cigala has released numerous influential albums, such as Picasso en mis ojos (2005), Dos lágrimas (2008), and Indestructible (2016). His 2020 album Cigala canta a México paid homage to the rich musical traditions of Mexico, adding another layer to his versatile artistry. Despite facing personal and public challenges throughout his life, El Cigala’s profound contributions to music have left an indelible mark, continuing to inspire both fans and fellow artists across the world.
