Dave East

David Lawrence Brewster Jr., better known by his stage name Dave East, is an American rapper and actor who emerged as a significant figure in the hip-hop scene. Born on June 3, 1988, in New York City, East grew up between East Harlem and Ravenswood, Queens. He is of Bajan and Louisiana Creole descent. His early years were marked by a passion for sports, particularly basketball, which he played at Springbrook High School in Silver Spring, Maryland. His talent on the court led him to attend the University of Richmond and later Towson University, where he continued to play basketball. However, his college career was cut short due to conflicts with the coaching staff, and East eventually left school, finding himself entangled in legal troubles in Baltimore.

In 2010, East began his music career by releasing his first mixtape, Change of Plans, which garnered him some local attention. Over the next few years, he released a series of mixtapes, including Insomnia, American Greed, and No Regrets, which helped solidify his commitment to pursuing a career in music. Despite his growing reputation, East supported himself by selling drugs in Harlem. His breakthrough came in 2014 with his eighth mixtape, Black Rose, which caught the attention of fellow New York rapper Nas. Impressed by East’s raw lyricism and storytelling, Nas signed him to his label, Mass Appeal Records. This partnership marked a turning point in East’s career, leading to the release of Hate Me Now in 2015, which featured collaborations with high-profile artists like Pusha T and Jadakiss.

In 2016, East’s rising fame earned him a spot in XXL’s Annual Freshman Class, alongside artists such as 21 Savage and Lil Uzi Vert. That same year, he signed a joint venture deal with Def Jam Recordings and released his tenth mixtape, Kairi Chanel, which peaked at number 38 on the Billboard 200. The mixtape featured guest appearances from The Game, Cam’ron, and 2 Chainz, among others. East’s popularity continued to grow, and in 2017, he made his acting debut in BET’s series Being Mary Jane. He also appeared in the Netflix film Beats (2019) and secured a recurring role as Method Man in the Hulu series Wu-Tang: An American Saga.

East released his debut studio album, Survival, in 2019, which peaked at number 11 on the Billboard 200. The album featured collaborations with Nas, Rick Ross, and Teyana Taylor, among others. In 2020, he followed up with Karma 3, a mixtape that received critical acclaim and included guest appearances from Chris Brown, Jeezy, and G Herbo. East continued to build his acting career while releasing music, including a collaborative album with producer Harry Fraud titled Hoffa in 2021. Known for his gritty storytelling and lyricism, East draws inspiration from legendary artists like Nas, The Notorious B.I.G., and Tupac Shakur.
