Ernesto “Che” Guevara (June 14, 1928 – October 9, 1967) was an influential Argentine revolutionary, physician, writer, guerrilla leader, diplomat, and military theorist. Born in Rosario, Argentina, he grew up as the eldest of five siblings in a middle-class family with progressive ideals. Despite suffering from asthma, Guevara stood out as both an athlete and a scholar. Before finalizing his medical studies in 1953, he set out on a transformative nine-month journey across Latin America. Witnessing firsthand the extreme poverty and inequality throughout the continent deeply shaped his political convictions.

In Mexico, Guevara met Fidel and Raúl Castro, joining their 26th of July Movement. His leadership played a key role in the Cuban Revolution, which culminated in the overthrow of dictator Fulgencio Batista in 1959. After the revolution, Guevara assumed prominent positions within the new Cuban government, spearheading initiatives such as land reforms and even serving as the president of the central bank. He also became Cuba’s voice on the global stage, advocating for revolutionary causes worldwide.

In 1965, Guevara left Cuba to spread revolutionary ideals elsewhere, first in the Congo and later in Bolivia. Unfortunately, his efforts in Bolivia faltered, and he was captured by Bolivian forces, aided by the CIA, and executed on October 9, 1967. Despite the controversial nature of his actions and the mixed results of his campaigns, Guevara remains an iconic figure, a symbol of rebellion and the pursuit of social justice.
