Akiko Urasaki, professionally known as Awich, is a celebrated Japanese hip-hop artist from Okinawa, born on December 16, 1986, in Naha, the capital of Okinawa. Raised in a cultural melting pot influenced by both Okinawan traditions and the nearby U.S. military presence, Awich’s early life was steeped in a unique blend of musical and cultural influences.
Her passion for music sparked at a young age, with Awich beginning to write lyrics at 13 and performing publicly by 14. Inspired by iconic hip-hop figures like Tupac Shakur, she embraced the genre and even learned English to connect more deeply with its culture.
At 19, Awich moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where she married and had a daughter. However, after her husband’s tragic murder, she returned to Japan to raise her child.
In 2018, Awich made a significant impact on Japan’s hip-hop scene. She released her major-label debut EP, Partition, in 2020, followed by her full album Queendom in 2022. Her music is known for its exploration of female empowerment, resilience, and her Okinawan roots.
