Calamaro’s musical journey began at the age of 17 when he joined the Argentine band Raíces as a keyboardist. His breakthrough came in the early 1980s when he became a key member of Los Abuelos de la Nada, a band that helped define the sound of Argentine rock during that period. In 1989, he co-founded the Spanish group Los Rodríguez, which achieved international fame with the hit “Sin documentos,” a blend of rock, flamenco, and Latin rhythms.

Venturing into a solo career, Calamaro released his debut album Hotel Calamaro in 1984 and followed it up with Vida Cruel in 1985. His 1997 album Alta Suciedad sold over half a million copies, solidifying his place in Latin music. He continued to push boundaries with subsequent albums like El Salmón in 2000, showcasing his immense songwriting talent.
