Amber Dawn Coffman, born on June 15, 1984, in Austin, Texas, is a highly regarded American singer-songwriter known for her distinctive contributions to indie and alternative music. Raised in a family that moved frequently, Coffman lived in Ohio, Texas, and California, attending eleven different schools. Her early musical influences came from 1990s R&B, which shaped her sound and style. In her teenage years, she developed a passion for rock music, eventually joining the math rock band Sleeping People as a guitarist, setting the stage for her future in music.

At the age of 22, Coffman moved to New York City, where she became a vital member of the indie rock band Dirty Projectors. As both a guitarist and vocalist, her distinctive voice became integral to tracks like “Stillness Is the Move” from their 2009 album Bitte Orca.
