Yesterwynde is the tenth studio album by the Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish, released on September 20, 2024, under Nuclear Blast. This album marks a significant chapter in the band’s evolution, being the first since Wishmaster (2000) to not feature bassist and male vocalist Marko Hietala following his departure in January 2021. Jukka Koskinen, who had joined the band as a touring member, officially stepped in as the bassist, making his studio debut with Yesterwynde.
The production of Yesterwynde began as early as March 2021, with primary songwriter Tuomas Holopainen working on drafts while also engaged with his side projects Auri and Darkwoods My Betrothed. By 2022, the band entered the studio, setting in motion the creation of what Holopainen described as both a continuation of the themes explored in Human. :II: Nature. (2020) and the final installment of a thematic trilogy that began with Endless Forms Most Beautiful (2015). Floor Jansen, the band’s lead vocalist, hinted at a shift toward a heavier sound, assuring fans that while the essence of Nightwish would remain intact, the new material would push the band’s boundaries further into symphonic metal’s grandiosity and complexity.
Musically, Yesterwynde continues Nightwish’s legacy of blending symphonic metal with progressive and gothic elements, but it also embraces an even more expansive orchestral and cinematic sound. The band’s signature epic style is evident, particularly in tracks like the 9-minute-long “An Ocean of Strange Islands” and the album’s centerpiece “Perfume of the Timeless,” where intricate compositions meet lush orchestral arrangements. Holopainen’s ability to create complex, atmospheric pieces shines through, with each track contributing to the album’s thematic narrative of humanism, history, and interconnectedness across time. These elements are especially prominent in “The Antikythera Mechanism,” where the ancient Greek device serves as a metaphor for human achievement and the passage of knowledge through generations.
Lyrically, Yesterwynde delves into themes that explore the human condition and history, inspired by Holopainen’s fascination with life’s fleeting nature. The album title, coined by band member Troy Donockley, evokes a sense of nostalgia and reflection on the impermanence of existence. Holopainen has described the album as optimistic, emphasizing a connection with past generations and the inevitability of becoming part of the universe’s scattered atoms, a concept explored in tracks such as “Lanternlight” and “Something Whispered Follow Me.”
The album opens with the titular track “Yesterwynde,” a brief but evocative introduction that sets the tone for the journey ahead. From the anthemic “The Day of…” to the hauntingly beautiful “Hiraeth,” a Welsh word that conveys a deep longing for home, each song offers a different perspective on time, memory, and the human spirit. Notably, “Spider Silk” and “The Weave” bring more introspective moments, offering a delicate balance to the album’s heavier and more expansive pieces.
Promotion for Yesterwynde began with the release of three singles: “Perfume of the Timeless” in May 2024, “The Day of…” in August 2024, and “An Ocean of Strange Islands” in September 2024. These tracks showcased the album’s thematic depth and musical grandeur, building anticipation among fans. A music video for “Lanternlight” was released on the same day as the album, further immersing listeners in the visual and auditory world of Yesterwynde.
In a departure from their usual approach, Nightwish opted not to embark on an immediate tour following the release of Yesterwynde, choosing instead to enter a hiatus from touring. This break, expected to last two to three years, will allow the band members to rest and explore other creative pursuits, leaving fans eagerly awaiting their return.
